Letterbox
Every Friday (sometimes Thursday) we will have a large container in our group area, marked with a letter. During our group time we will review the letter, how it’s made, and what it sounds like. Each child will tell what they have brought and we will begin making connections between letters and sounds.
We will NOT be going through the letters in alphabetical order. Letters will be introduced following our curriculum “Get Set For School” that is part of the Handwriting Without Tears framework. This program was created by occupational therapists and integrates a multisensory approach to preparing children for success in language, social skills, fine and gross motor control, color and shape awareness, letter and number recognition, and counting.
The letters introduced in September and October will be letters that can be formed using horizontal and vertical lines. As we progress through the year, the letters will incorporate increasingly difficult curves and diagonals. The “Get Set For School” program focuses on meeting children at their individual developmental stage and growing from there. Each child will be expected to participate in this program at a level that is appropriate for him/her. From singing a song, building wood piece letters, rolling out dough letters, using “flip crayons” to trace and color workbook pages, writing on chalkboards following a model, or writing independently, there is something for everyone!
Here is our current schedule for the letters this year (may be subject to change!):
